Nursery Foundation Stage

Our children acquire basic skills in a happy and structured environment. We help them to gain confidence and develop independence. We aim to prepare them for full-time formal education by working towards a set of learning goals closely allied to those designed by the Schools Curriculum Assessment Authority. Children learn about the world around them through active methods and play and take part in movement, dance, drama, music and singing.

The emphasis is placed on speech, language development, vocabulary, reading and the understanding of number and scientific concepts as we cover the core subjects of Key Stage One of the National Curriculum.

Pupils are introduced to indoor Physical Education, outdoor Games, Art, Craft and Technology, Religious Education, Speech and Drama. They also undertake topic work relating to History and Geography, Music, Singing and Play activities. They have regular access to the class computers and familiarise themselves with their use. We seek to stimulate young inquisitive minds and to develop their self-control. Children participate in the Annual Spring and Nativity Plays.

Infants

Year 1 and and Year 2 are taught together in the Infants. Children in Reception who are already 4 and no longer follow the requirements of the Foundation Stage may also be advanced to work in this class. Children are taught above and beyond the requirements of Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum.

With small teacher groups including an excellent Teaching Assistant for numeracy, literacy and art lessons, all children get differentiated activities allowing them all to succeed to the highest level. Many children will begin to enjoy extra curricular activities such as ballet, music and drama at this age.

With a qualified dyslexia teacher on the staff at this age group, any special educational needs can be easily picked-up and monitored closely. All children benefit from a multi-sensory approach to lessons.

Upper School

"We aim to achieve the highest standard of written and spoken English, extending children's horizons through literature, poetry and drama..."

Our pupils expect to do well and are helped to acquire positive attitudes towards their education, with parents and class teachers working together to develop their skills and talents in a supportive and happy environment.

Boys and girls devote considerable time and effort developing competence in the three core subjects of English, Maths and Science as they continue through Key Stage Two of the National Curriculum. Modern and traditional methods ensure a sound grounding in the rules of number, tables and the understanding and application of all aspects of Mental Arithmetic and Mathematics.

There is a larger element of specialised teaching in Upper School and we encourage pupils to take a pride in their work. National Curriculum targets and Common Entrance requirements form the basis on which we build a broad and lively programme which includes Religious Education, French, History, Geography, Art and Craft, Design and Technology, Music, Singing, Speech and Drama, Physical Education and Games. Pupils learn computer skills and regular homework reinforces the work done in school. Equal emphasis is given to Science work where work is mainly practical and investigative.
